Memory Bug

Posted by dale on Thu, 09 Dec 2004 10:22:57 EST

The server that runs this site, metro (http://metro.dalegroup.net/phpsysinfo-dev/) has always had a small bug that would sometimes cause the system to hard lock.

Yesterday in an attempt to fix the problem I replaced all of the ram in the system. The server also got an upgrade from 640mb to 896mb of ram.

Unfortunately the system hard locked sometime last night (although it still responded to pings, odd). The problem seems to be a bug in the BIOS firmware, and there is no new update available (and none coming, it is an old motherboard).

The memory I had in the server before only supported CAS 3, now there is an option in the BIOS to support this but every time the server is reset is loses this setting (note it isn’t a power problem as all other settings are in tacked). This means it is running at CAS 2 and the ram cannot handle it.

So I replaced the ram so it supports CAS 2. But the system still crashed. So it looks like I still need to stick to CAS 3. The problem isn’t that bad, apart from that the server is very stable.

But I cannot really let this server run more sites as it still is a problem :(

Although I still like it. It is very fast. Dual Pentium 3 650MHz with 896mb of ram, just to run this single site!
