tiger installer on the ipod

Posted by Michael Dale on Thu, 05 May 2005 8:30 PM

I got a friend's old ibook today (G3 500MHz, 320MB Ram etc) to try and upgrade the operating system. It was running Mac OS 9.2.2, pretty old. So anyway I pulled out my newly purchased Tiger DVD and put it into the laptop. Oh dear, it only had a CD rom drive.

So anywhere there is a way copy the installer DVD onto your ipod and boot straight off it.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Connect your iPod (make sure it is formatted to the Mac OS, NOT FAT32) to a Mac with a DVD drive and ensure that you have enabled mounting of your iPod as a disk. You should also insert the Tiger DVD.
  2. Launch Apple's Disk Utility applet, found in /Applications/Utilities/
  3. Choose any disk listed on the left hand side and select the "Restore" tab.
  4. Here you will see a "Source:" field and a "Destination:" field. On the left you should be able to find your iPod drive and your Tiger DVD. You want to drag the Tiger DVD to the "Source:" field and the iPod drive to the "Destination:" field.
  5. Next click Restore. You need not check "Erase Destination".

Once that is done, simply plug the ipod into the ibook via firewire. Boot the system and it should detect the ipod and start installing tiger (you might need to press "C" while starting the system, I don't remember).

So anyway now I carry around a copy of tiger on my ipod just incase I need to install it on a system. Ah apple make it so easy :)

I remember the new Machintosh operating systems are written from scratch and are based off UNIX. Does that mean? You can like mount via the command line eg) mount /dev/devicewhatever /mnt/mountdirectory?

I spose you *could* but the question is why? You have a mac, you don't need to. Everything auto mounts.

If you need to be able to write to your ipod like a hard disc there is the option in itunes.

I'm interested in Macs at the moment because:

  • Tiger has already been released. While Longhorn isn't going to released till 2007. M$$ is behind...
  • There's been a lot of hype about MACs, so of course I'm going to be interested
  • I like *nix and aparrently Panther and onwards is based on UNIX. Obviously I want to find out if that it is true and evident
  • Macs use RISC which is theoretically faster as long as you are not a gamer. A dual G4 laptop (will be released soon) appeals to me. A Mac with a G5 processor would be too expensive

I dont think he does. Dont mistake matthom or me for poika.

First off. My name is Matthew is not Poika!
Would you like me to call you shrimphead. I think not. So don't call me names! :X The only exception allowed for calling me Poika is from friends.

Now for question part.
Dale had every right to ask that question. Since, during the time I was walking with a few friends to a Mac shop. Dale walked past me and said hi....... which you don't know about.
I originally intended to buy a Mac Mini the next day after visiting the shop but they are expensive in Australia And horribly slow with only 256MB of RAM.

Anyways, if Dale is actually mixed up. Well too bad. I prefer to use my real name. =p

All of the OS X series are based on Unix, specifically Darwin.
