In an open plan office you can hear almost everything,
I tell you want I DON'T want to hear.
Your crappy mobile phone ring tones. Use something that sounds like a REAL phone, or have your phone set to silent.
If I get time tomorrow I am going to purchase tiger. So I decided to do a backup of my Mac to my Windows 2003 file server.
I have Windows sharing turned on for the Mac and am copying the files from the Windows system.
Currently the Mac cannot access Windows shares on a Server 2003 system because of the authentication used, I’m hoping tigers adds support for this. (Note that a Mac works happily with every other Windows OS).
There were a few problems copying files, mainly to do with permissions and the simple fact that the Mac file system (HFS+ if I remember correctly) is much more advanced than NTFS.
Although there were a few problems I was impressed with the way Windows handled the errors (of course Samba on the Mac translated most of the file structure differences into something Windows understands).

Permissions of the current user do not have access to the file (above).

If you have a Telstra mobile phone then you probably haven't been able to use it most of the day.
The network died at about 10am, supposedly Telstra didn't realise until 1.30pm BUT MY PHONE IS STILL NOT WORKING (and it's now 4.45pm).
Not happy when you're in the middle of a Rally trying to find people. Speaking of the Rally it was quite successful :) Got myself a free shirt, yay :p
So anyway, back to Telstra. I tried ringing their support line and FAR OUT. The system is voice activated and the first question is "So please try to explain what your problem is"....Now I could go into a long rant about problems, but far out. It doesn't understand anything. So anyway I gave up, piece of....
So if you sent me any sms' today or something, I didn't get them.
I haven't had the chance to work on the code for this site for a while, been pretty busy with uni. Anyway I have a week off (some Faculty of IT thing, not uni wide) which is cool. I did a touch up on some code tonight. I'm now running version 0.3.9 of my code.
0.3.8 added the following:
I'd like to release something at version 0.4.0 but we'll see. If I release it at that version it probably still isn't ready for general use. But I'll get there slowly.
It looks like I'm moving out of home. Max and I have got an apartment in Bondi. The place currently has people living in it, although it will be free in August (which is when we move in). Lots of things need to be planned. I'd like to have (finally) my P's by that stage.
More details as they become available. Very excited.
I drove up to the Blue Mountains yesterday (I clocked up 165km) to help clean up my grandmother’s place.
In the process of cleaning I scored myself a set of old (but large) speakers. Why are all old speakers so big? I also got some Hitachi Amp with a built in radio, cool.
Anyway, these speakers have two tweeters, one mid range and one low range.
While I was giving them a test I noticed that the base felt much separated from the voice, compared to my current speakers. I feel this is mainly because my other smaller speakers only have one tweeter and one "everything else" speaker.
So they need to provide a lot of the lower end sound that would otherwise be taken care of the mid range speaker.
I'm not sure if I like the sound of the bigger speakers as much. Although I haven't had a real chance to play with them. I have a better amp I need to try, plus some different music.
They're pretty old so I'm not expecting much. But hey they will be _very_ useful in the future (more on that later).
But yeah. Free stuff is cool.
I was deleting some links on my toolbar and noticed a link to a blog site. Ah I remember book marking this page because it had something interesting on it. I don't remember what it was, but anyway. I started having a quick read.
First post mentions (La)TeX, now that sounds familiar. Ah yes TFM uses (La)Tex.
Next post talks about SLUG and its new committee. Funny, because only a few weeks ago I moved their webserver on to our stolen fridge, yet I've never met these people!
Wow such a small world. I might go to the next slug meeting....
The Quartz crystal in my component radio has long since died. It has trouble locking onto a station, how lame. So I haven't really been listening to the radio at all. My ipod is pretty full (and probably a third of it IS legal) but I've sort of listened to the stuff I liked on it far too much.
Anyway I bought a TV tuner card sometime last year to copy a few VHS tapes. Since then it hasn't been used. Luckily I didn't pay too much for it (although I could get a digital version cheaper now). But I just remembered today that is has a built in FM tuner. So I hooked it up and it like, works! Cool. So I have the radio again. Plus I can record and stream it. Cool. Pity I need to turn my computer on for it to work.
But yeah, I'm pretty happy.
Since I haven't listened to the radio for a while, what's a good station?
I've added support for basic searching. Currently it only searches the body of each article. I plan on expanding that at some stage. I might write up what it supports (syntax) later.
Well last night we had the Progsoc AGM (Annual General Meeting) where members were voted into executive positions (photos still being uploaded there). Here are some photos (some aren't great because I had the settings wrong on my camera).
So here are some photos of UTS
As you might notice this isn't UTS. We er went into the wrong building, yes that sounds good ;)
[update] Sorry I noticed that the links were wrong (/photo instead of /photos) this has been updated.
Most of the people doing an IT course at UTS get 24 hours a day access to the building plus access to certain rooms.
We are each assigned a pin number that gives us this access. To enter the building you need to type this pin into a special key pad.
Now a few of us a uni decided we should test it out. The system works pretty well and provides good security.
What happens is you press a button on the key pad and all the numbers randomize. You then type in your pin. So each time you enter your pin the placement of the numbers is in a different location. This means people watching you cannot tell what numbers you have pressed. The numbers are also only visible at a certain angle and distance, meaning it is very hard to look over someone’s shoulder without them noticing.
I think it is a pretty cool little system. Here is a picture (argh animated gif!) of what it looks like:

I've been nagging Ben a bit for a rewrite enabled version (aka sexy links) of cat-scan. Which he has delivered with Cat-scan version 0.8.5.
The upgrade installed straight over the top and re-generated any new thumbnails if needed (for case sensitivity on *nix systems). The great thing is that the old links still work. So it is a win win. New rewrited links, but also support for the old ones.
Ben has even added a “speed_freak” option for people like me who don’t need all the features. Great! Nice and fast.
Anyway Ben has posted about his new version Here
I’ve just written in support for sending trackbacks so hopefully it works. On both ends too, because I wrote the script that runs his blog. Hehe *fingers crossed*
Oh yeah Here is a link to my photos
It has been a while since I had a chance to do some work on the backend of this site. My old blog script supported incoming and outgoing trackbacks, something this site up until now didn't support. Well I cannot yet send trackbacks, but the function is there and I'll finish that off later.
But yes you should now be able to send trackbacks to this site. Just cut the Trackback URI found at the bottom of each post and paste it into your blog script.
All trackbacks go straight into moderation before they "become live".
Google has increased there Gmail to 2gb, up from 1gb.
I have a gmail account, but I've never really used it. I few of my friends use it religiously. It really does have some cool features. Labels are very useful. You can apply a label (or more) to each email. Think of them like categories. You can have an email part of any category. It can be really useful for sorting email.
You also get POP3 access and a great web interface. If that had IMAP and IMAPS support I would seriously consider using it.
Yet another incredibly busy week, which seems to be happening more often since UNI started.
I’ve applied for a scholarship for a free trip to America to go to the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. UTS often gets these scholarship places every year and I was told that I should try out.
There are only very limited places so I have no idea what my chances are, but I would really love to go. I should find out if I have received a place on April 6th. So I’ll let everyone know.
Thursday was a very busy day! A group of us from School decided it would be a good idea to catch up with everyone. We’re trying to do something at least once a month, it is really hard to stay in touch with uni and stuff.
So we all went off to yum cha and had some great food (mango pancakes anyone?!). After that we decided to head over to the Star Bar in George Street and give that a shot (pun intended).
I then needed to rush off to work to setup a Laptop for someone who is going overseas to do some development work at a goldmine in Papa New Guinea (I think). Just a quick note. Access 97 DOES NOT work on Windows XP. I tried, it doesn’t work at all.
I then headed off to uni for a “meeting” with the programmers society. Which, as always ended up in us just getting pizzas and talking about nerdy stuff. Although I have been nominated as the Vice-President for the society. Which I wasn’t expecting, but hey. Cool. Thanks guys.
I didn’t get home until about 11pm that day.
Yesterday I held a small lan party for some uni friends. The game of the day was Battlefield Vietnam. Quite a fun game. It even run okay on my old Pentium 3 that I setup.
After that I went to the “Year 13 cocktails night” at the Star Bar again. I’m not sure why they call it “Year 13” because I know for sure I don’t go to St. Andrew’s. Oh well. It was a great time. We got to meet up with heaps of people from Year 12 2004. Lots of people ended up coming, more than I expected.
Everyone had a bit too much to drink (that’s what happens when the drinks are free) and I didn’t get home until about 1am this morning.
Wow, big week. But it has been very enjoyable. Now I probably should do some work this weekend. :)
